The Former Kaiser CEO Takes Questions in the Green Room

David Lawrence is the former CEO and chairman of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. Before discussing how the healthcare system can reinvent doctor-patient relationships, he reflected on how his first doctor’s visit terrified him-and on his love of tacos, chocolate, and tequila.

Q. What is your guilty pleasure?

A. Chocolate.

Q. What is the most functional part of the healthcare system?

A. Self-care.

Q. If you could resurrect a fashion fad, what would it be?

A. Levi’s blue jeans.

Q. What do you wake up to?

A. Silence.

A. The Market Margarita from Red O.

Q. If you could be any animal, what would it be?

A. A quarter horse.

Q. What was the first doctor visit you remember?

A. I was three or four. It scared the sweet bejesus out of me.

A. Truck tacos.

A. Fishing.
