The Rain Inspires Me

Beverly Noerr, the Executive Director of Redlands Community Music Association, Wants You to Get to Know the Sophisticated Side of Her Hometown

Beverly Noerr is the executive director of Redlands Community Music Association, an organization that hosts a free annual summer concert series in Redlands, California. Before joining a Zócalo/James Irvine Foundation panel discussion on community art programs—“How Do We Keep Community in the Community Arts Scene?”—she talked in the Zócalo green room about motorcycles, hugging her daughters, and not wearing white shoes before Memorial Day.

Q:

What’s one of your favorite performances that you’ve been involved with at the Redlands Bowl?

A:

We did the play 1776 a few years ago. It was an election year. That felt very powerful to me.

Q:

What’s your earliest memory of creating art?

A:

I grew up in Florida, so I drew a lot of rain when I was a child. I think rain inspires a lot of creativity.

Q:

Motorcycles: cool or dangerous?

A:

This is your mother talking: They are dangerous.

Q:

What’s one thing you would say about Redlands to a person who doesn’t know anything about it?

A:

It’s a sophisticated Mayberry. There are lots of arts and educational opportunities, but it’s very hometown at the same time.

Q:

If you had to live in one state other than California for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

A:

It would have to be Georgia. I have a lot of family there.

Q:

If you were to spend next weekend volunteering, what would you do?

A:

I would volunteer for the University of Redlands Town and Gown board. I’m a member. We raise money for kids to go to school.

Q:

Mountains or ocean?

A:

Yes, please. Both.

Q:

What would you do with an extra hour in your day?

A:

I would put one of my daughters under one arm, and my other daughter under my other arm.

Q:

What’s a fashion rule that should never be broken?

A:

No white shoes before Memorial Day. That’s an old Southern rule. My mom just cringes when she sees that broken.

Q:

What vegetable best describes you?

A:

I want to say arugula, but I’ll say corn. I’m approachable.

Q:

How essential is eight hours of sleep?

A:

So essential, and I never get it.
