Oahu Neighbors Share Their Ideas to Boost Civic Pride in the Aloha State

According to surveys, Hawaii residents have some of the highest levels of personal happiness, job satisfaction, and community pride among all Americans. Yet the state had the nation’s lowest voting rate in the 2016 presidential election. It ranks 48th in volunteering and 37th in giving to charity. What can be done to get Hawaii residents to vote more, volunteer more, and give back more? How can Hawaii residents encourage their friends and family members to participate more in civic life? Zócalo and the Daniel K. Inouye Institute asked journalism students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa to put these questions to their neighbors across Oahu. Here are some of their answers.
