I Promised My Parents I Wouldn’t Get Tattoos

If Homeless Shelter Director Cruz Avila Were a Dog, He’d Be a Husky

Cruz Avila is the executive director of Poverello House, a center that offers meals, shelter, healthcare, and social services to the homeless in Fresno, California. Before joining a Zócalo/The California Wellness Foundation panel discussion on his city’s struggle with inequality and unemployment—“Can Fresno Win the War on Poverty?”—he talked in the Zócalo green room about huskies, the satisfaction of helping those in need, and the origins of his name.

Q:

What’s the best part of growing up in Fresno County?

A:

The agriculture. Folks say we’re in a drought, but you still can’t go wrong with the organic food here.

Q:

Beach or mountains?

A:

Mountains.

Q:

Where does your name, “Cruz,” come from?

A:

My grandfather’s name is Cruz. My first name is José, but in junior college, there were like six Josés in my class, so I just asked the teacher to call me Cruz, in honor of my grandfather.

Q:

If you hosted a radio show, what would it be about?

A:

Just about people giving their thoughts and opinions. Like a Q&A. It’s always interesting to hear people’s thoughts on things.

Q:

Who’s your favorite Peanuts character?

A:

I really don’t have one. I never got into that. Though at Christmas, we did put up a Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

Q:

What made you decide to work for nonprofits?

A:

It has always been a passion of mine. I grew up with the morals from my parents to help those in need.

Q:

What bar game are you best at: pool, darts, etc.?

A:

Oh, I don’t know. I’m open to playing different stuff.

Q:

What has been your proudest accomplishment in the past year?

A:

All of my work. It’s really able to affect the lives of those in need. That’s a really big accomplishment for me, both personally and professionally.

Q:

If you were a dog, what breed would you like to be?

A:

A husky. They’re very loyal, and great companions. They’re always going to love you, no matter what. I have one that’s about a year old.

Q:

Do you have any tattoos?

A:

No. I always told my mom and dad I wouldn’t get them.
