Wistfully Glimpsing Nature Through a Window

Cha Pornea is an illustrator and designer who lives in the Philippines. Drawing inspiration from vintage illustrations and films that sparked her imagination when she was a child, she refined her playful combinations of simple shapes and digitally painted textures while studying art at Manila’s De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

Pornea’s pieces often show scenes that are composed within multiple frames, which reflects her own busy life. “I didn’t really get to enjoy the outdoors the past year,” she says, “Even if it was just in a minimal way, I got to admire nature looking outside the windows when I was traveling.” In her illustrations for Zócalo, Cha conjures the familiar feeling of longingly gazing out the window into the natural world as we speed by on our way to somewhere else.
