The Affordable Care Act has been touted as universal coverage, but in fact, it is far from universal. Adult, undocumented immigrants are excluded from the law’s benefits and obligations. At the same time, many thousands of people lawfully in the country may not be able to get health insurance under it. And this highly complicated law is likely to seem even more complicated for immigrant families in which the English-language skills and legal status of each member is different. How can immigrants, documented and not, navigate the famously hard-to-navigate Obamacare? Will they benefit from new clinics and investments in healthcare that are provided by the law, or will the expansion of coverage to U.S. citizens and green card holders further isolate recent arrivals, and make it harder for them to get proper care? St. John’s Well Child and Family Center CEO Jim Mangia, National Immigration Law Center health policy attorney Gabrielle Lessard, and UCLA Center for Health Policy Research health insurance studies director Shana Alex Lavarreda visit Zócalo to discuss how immigrant communities in Los Angeles and across California can cope with the country’s new health insurance regime.
