It’s Serious—I’d Marry Him

Yanira Ajanen

I’m on my way home from work. When I get a difficult customer, I try to not let it bother me. I lower my voice to a very sweet tone. They can’t really be rude to me if I’m so nice to them.

I’m from Los Angeles, but my mom is from Mexico City and my dad is from Guatemala. My dad is half indigenous. He speaks K’iche’ and Spanish. Sometimes my brother and sister and I ask him how to say words in K’iche’. Then we can pretend to speak in “code” when we’re with other people who don’t understand the language.

I’m reading Malala Yousafzai’s book. She’s the youngest person to win a Nobel Prize. I’m happy to say that I haven’t gone through struggle that compares to hers, but I’ve learned a lot from it. It’s made me appreciate my family, my friends, and my boyfriend. My boyfriend makes me happy. We’ve been together for eight years. It’s serious—I’d marry him.
