Used to Fish Here

by Gary Galsworth

Used to fish here as a kid. Carp, sunnies . . .
“Me too,” he said, “I grew up just over there,”–pointing.

He was less than half my age, but we spoke of it
as contemporaries.
“I got a four-year-old,” he said, “so been coming back.”

A carp broke the surface about 20 feet out.
“Not like it used to be,” he said.

Really? What’s changed? Having just had a conversation
with myself, walking the path around the lake, on how
it all seems so-unchanged.

Ducks honking in the weeds, bushes overhanging the water,
fireflies rising out of the grass.
