The names range from the weighty old-fashioned ones (the famous Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot) to the crackling boastful ones (comic book man Johnny Double and Shaft, the black Bond). But the list is missing some heavy hitters, like Perry Mason, who was a detective before he was a lawyer, and Inspectors Maigret and Gadget.
