Secretary of Labor Picks

Appearing on some short lists for Barack Obama’s Labor Secretary pick is Maria Echaveste, who came to Zócalo earlier this month to talk about the making of the new administration. She chatted briefly about the labor post during the panel, noting that the country could potentially face double-digit unemployment, and that the post needed to go to someone who possessed “new thinking” about “the new knowledge-based economy at a time when we’re not going to have the resources, when we have to make hard decisions.” She added that whoever took the post would have to be “a strong voice at the national economic table, arguing with Treasury and the Office of Management and Budget.”
