Who Takes This Desert Home?

Shadows stick into the horizon
like thorns of flame.
I am a magician,
angels on my right
illusions on my left.
On my shoulders, sands that lost their way
spout,
and in my head a whirlpool pervades oblivion.
Armies chase me
and there is no refuge
except for the cloak of God.
The desert unrolls
from mind to mind
where hope
in the old stone
stirs up death
for a song that never dies.
This is my phantom strewn about water.
This is my sun rolling down on the dunes.
Where does this falsehood come from?
I cross over the trick
to an unseen lighthouse,
where idols graze in the valley.
There are wailing losses.
There are fires in the soul.
There are fingers that do not point
and broken signals.
Who takes this desert
home
before snakes drop off
and trail this lame night
to the abyss?
Lofty Father,
who is this immigrant who came back
without a body or motherland?
I’m a magician,
I dangled my dream on border fences
and went down to the sea
without a boat except for my shirt.

من يدل هذه الصحراء إلى بيتها؟

الظلال تنغرز في الأفق
مثل أشواك من لهب.
أنا الساحر
في يميني ملائكة
وفي يساري أوهام.
على كتفي تسيح رمال أضاعت
دربها،
وفي رأسي دوامة تخترق النسيان.
الجيوش تتعقبني
ولا مفر لي
غير عباءة الله.
والصحراء تمتد
من العقل إلى العقل
حيث الرجاء
بالحجر القديم
وهو يثير زوبعة الموت
لأغنية لا تموت.
هذا سرابي يتناثر على الماء
وهذه شمسي تتدحرج
على الكثبان.
من أين يمرق هذا الباطل؟
أعبر الخديعة
إلى فنار لا يُرى،
حيث ثمة أوثان ترعى في الوادي،
ثمة خسارات تنوح
ثمة حرائق في الروح
ثمة أصابع لا تشير
وإشارات مقطوعة.
من يدل هذه الصحراء
إلى بيتها
قبل أن تهبط الأفاعي
مجرجرة هذا الليل الكسيح
إلى الهاوية؟
أيها الأب العالي
من ذا المهاجر الذي عاد
بلا جسد ولا وطن؟
أنا الساحر
على أسلاك الحدود علقت حلمي
ونزلت البحر
ولا قارب لي سوى القميص.
