Third Street Hollywood Boulevard

A Welcome Umbrella at the Bus Stop

Annelie Young

I’m from South Africa. I’ve been in L.A. for five years now. I’m coming from a country where I’m used to the culture. Here, it’s very international, and you see it a lot on the bus.

I always see an older man on my commute; he’s maybe in his 70s. Once it was raining, and he held his umbrella over me while we were waiting at the stop. Since then, every time we see each other on the bus, we chat—usually about what’s going on in the other person’s day.
