My Girl Cooks Good Southern Food

Michael Whyte

When I go to work at 5 a.m., I get on the bus and snooze. I work in a warehouse and just finished unloading a bunch of bikes. I like my job. It pays the bills!

I’m originally from the South—Jackson, Mississippi. My mom wanted to start something different, so she packed our bags and we headed to California when I was one-year-old. I’ve been here ever since.

I have a girlfriend. We’ve been together for five years but we’ve known each other for 17 years. It took us a long time to start talking to each other. My girl cooks good Southern food. Sometimes we take the Metro downtown for sushi. We pay $20-something but it’s real good.
