The First Word I Learned in Sign Language was ‘Kiss’

Susie Barba

I’m on my way to my babies. I work as a caregiver at a child development center. My mom ran a childcare center when I was younger, so this came natural to me. I take care of three babies every day. They recognize me and smile every time they see me. I like nurturing them.

I also teach basic sign language. I want to go back to school to get certified as an interpreter. I first learned sign language when I dated someone who was deaf. When we first met, communication was really hard. But I fell in love with him, so I decided to learn. It was hard, but I was very dedicated and interested. The first word I learned was “kiss.”
